Tiger Woods’ Return Fraustrates Golfers in New Nike Ad

A new Nike commercial portrays Tiger Woods’ return to golf with cheers from fans but disappointment from fellow golfers.
The ad’s premise has Nike-endorsed golfers Anthony Kim, Stewart Cink, Trevor Immelman, Justin Leonard and Carl Pettersson winning tournament after tournament while Woods is out with an injury.
The dramatic climax of the commercial is when a healthy Woods enters the locker room and by his mere presence alone, he changes the mood from celebration to desperation.
The gist being now that Tiger is back, golfers that enjoyed success in his absence will now be playing for second-place.
Kim, Cink, Leonard, Immelman and Pettersson were good sports to be portrayed as fodder for Tiger’s domination. Not many athletes would allow themselves to publicly lament the return of a competitor (although paychecks from Nike helped).
However, the five golfers shouldn’t bemoan Wood’s return, they should celebrate. Woods may hoard all the trophies, but his presence on the tour makes everyone extremely wealthy.
Woods return to action this week at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in Marana, Arizona.
