Florida Beats Oklahoma: So what do you want, an Apocalypse?

Meaning in the BCS and a Year-end Review
All right, let’s take a deep breath and relax. It’s not the end of the world. Remember, we have 233 days until college footbal begins again. We need to handle those withdrawal pains (at least until the draft tides us over a few months). What better way to soothe our anxieties than by wondering what it all means to have Florida win the National Championship.
After all, some fans (and remember, “fan” is short for fanatic, frantically argue that USC should win part of the NCAA championship, specifically the AP title. They did just that a few years ago leading to speculation they may “threepeat” by beating Vince Young and Texas even though they only really won once. Maybe they would have a better argument if they would stop losing the easy ones early in the year after dominating a few of the hard ones.
Other may just as passionately argue that someone else should share the title. Utah is certainly good enough to play in a BCS conference and I hope they are trying to do just that but two months of minor compeitition just can’t cut it despite their terrific effort against an overrated Alabama Crimson Tide.

The point is that facile arguments are due to the current BCS system. Is this what we want to talk about for the next six months, who deserved it more? Instead, let’s just say that Florida showed dominance in a very good BCS conference as well as beating the arguably best team from the best BCS conference. What more needs be said than “Now if there were a playoff…”
I have already written why I don’t think there will be a playoff (check it out Here) and therefore I am resigned to end the argument. Florida wins. Wait til next year.

If course, I can remember the good stuff:
10 Best Games in the NCAA:
1. Texas/Ohio State. The best BCS Bowl Game this year. Bucks gained some respect.
2. Texas/Texas Tech. The game that sent the BCS in a tizzy.
3. TCU/Boise State. The best of the rest of the bowls. What football is all about.
4. Oklahoma/Texas. The best game from the best conference. Two great teams going back and forth all day long.
5. Oregon State/USC. C’mon Trojans, win the ones you’re supposed to.
6. Buffalo/Temple. A minor game in the grand scheme but had the best Hail Mary pass of the season. Entertaining and thrilling.
7. Florida/Alabama. Exposed undefeated Crimson Tide as being not quite ready for prime time.
8. Georgia/Georgia Tech. Exposed an overall weakness in SEC … until LSU kicked their butts in the bowl game.
9. Utah/TCU. Best comeback win.
10. Penn State/Ohio State. Best defensive game.
Honorable Mentions — East Carolina/Virginia Tech, Miami/Florida State, Alabama/LSU, Iowa/Penn State
10 Worst Games (with the Biggest Hype)
1. Florida/Georgia. Largest outdoor cocktail zzzzzzz.
2. USC/Ohio State. This was supposed to be play-in game to the championship.
3. Oklahoma/Texas Tech. Not even close.
4. LSU/Georgia Tech. Chik-Fil-A Bowl. Most overhyped non-BCS game.
5. Texas/Missouri. What happened to Chase Daniel?
6. Alabama/Clemson. Remember how this was Clemson’s year to win the ACC and this was the coming out game? Neither do I.
7. USC/Notre Dame. Why do we keep thinking Charlie Weis can win a big game?
8. USC/Penn State. Most overhyped BCS Bowl game. Don’t worry Big Ten fans, things are looking up for next year… right?
9. Florida/LSU. If I were an LSU fan I might be worried how they fell apart tis year.
10. Utah/BYU. Only thing holy was the BYU defense.
Players have already gotten well-deserved awards. How about teams and conferences?
Most exciting season — Texas. What a schedule!
Least exciting season — Michigan. How do you lose to a bad MAC school? I mean Appalachian State at leat has a championship pedigree.
Most surprising season — Georgia Tech. New coach, new system, yet they still found a way to win. Made the ACC a better conference.

Best conference during season. Big 12. (Sorry SEC, you lost a notch despite Florida’s win).
Best conference top-to-bottom. ACC. Who knew?
Best conference during bowls — PAC 10. It helps to have some easy games.
Worst conference during season — Big East. Cincinnati and a new coach win it?
Worst conference during bowls — Big 10. Again.
Best non-BCS Conference — Mountain West. Again. Any chance of them replacing the Big East?
Best Conference top to bottom — ACC. The worst team is a 4-8 Duke, not too shabby.
Conference with best offenses — Big 12. By far.
Conference with best QBs — Big 12. By farm although Tebow might be best overall.
Conference with best RBs — Big 10. Of course, nobody else runs as much.
Confernece with best OLs — SEC. Nuf said.
Conference with best WRs — Big 12.
Conference with best overall defenses — Big 10.
Confernece with best LBs — Big 10.
Conference with best DLs — SEC.
Conference with best Secondaries — Pac 10.
Finally, the one debate I would like to have over the next few months is which team is Team of the Decade. The first question is: does the decade cover 2000-2009 or 2001-2010? The second question is: does playing in the BCS championship game as good as winning it? To me, five teams still have a shot:
LSU(2 NC games, 2 championships)
Ohio State(3 games, 1 championship)
USC (2 games, 1 championship, 1 AP co-title)
Oklahoma(4 games, 1 championship)
If any of these teams win next year, they should be the team of the decade. If you want the next season after that, it’s more complicated. If a different team wins, it’s more complicated. We’ll have to devise some tiebreakers. That’ll be a debate.
