FedEx BCS National Championship Game Preview

It is pointless to go over how each of these teams got here.  Oklahoma is #1 and the Big XII Champion, Florida is #2 and the SEC Champion.  The epic argument comes to an end for the 2008 season, who is better the Big XII or the SEC.  As a SEC person (Alabama) even if Florida loses, I would still argue that the SEC is the best, but it is hard to argue against the team with the hardware in the end.  If Oklahoma is to win, then an argument could be made that they were just that much better than there competition and really the Big XII South Monster Four (Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma St.) isn’t as bad as their bowl record (1-2).  If Florida is the winner, then the argument continues as the SEC would three-peat as National Champions.  Then an interesting argument will begin, who is the team of the 2000s, Florida or USC.

According to the NCAA states, if I am a Sooner fan I would worry about my defense.  On the average, Oklahoma gives up 359.08 yards of offense to Florida 279.31.  Florida gives up on an average 12.85 points per game, as Oklahoma gives up 24.54 points per game.  The stat that really made the decision for me was the passing defense.  Anytime you get a top offense and top defense, usually the top defense wins the battle.  If Oklahoma’s, who on average racks up 356.54 passing yards a game, bread and butter is the pass, I would worry.  Florida gives up on a average 94.17 passing yards a game.  Don’t give me the argument that the SEC is a running league.  Florida had to defend the pass against Tennessee, Georgia, LSU, and South Carolina.  They are not the best passing offenses, but they can rack up yards.  Therefore, with that said…

Verdict in favor of…

Florida 38  Oklahoma 17

I just don’t think Sam Bradford, as good as he is, will be able to throw the ball at will like he did in the Big XII.  I think Oklahoma may score early, but once Florida gets a feel for the passing attack, they will shut it down.  Also, I was at the SEC Championship Game, Tim Tebow just doesn’t lose…period.  Then again, if you look at my picks for the BCS games, Florida I would be worried.
