Allen Iverson Traded to Detroit Pistons for Chauncey Billups

3 Nov

After losing to the Boston Celtics in the 2008 Eastern Conference Finals, Detroit Pistons president Joe Dumars promised there “are no sacred cows” on his roster. On Monday, Dumars proved he was a man of his word.

Pistons have finalized a trade that sends stalwarts Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess to the Denver Nuggets for Allen Iverson.

Also going to Denver is center Cheikh Samb, selected by the Los Angeles Lakers for the Pistons with the 51st overall pick in the 2006 draft.

Billups is a Denver native, he played college hoops at the University of Colorado and was a Nugget from 1998 to 2000.

Rumor has McDyess, also a former Nugget, being bought out of his contract. The 34-year-old power forward will likely not suit up for the Nuggets.

How does this trade impact each team?

Over the summer, Denver traded away center Marcus Camby for financial reasons. Now, by trading Iverson, the Nuggets have eliminated another large salary.

On the court, the Nuggets needed a traditional point guard and now have one in the 2004 NBA Finals MVP. Billups will certainly shoot less than Iverson and pass more to scorers like Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith.

Meanwhile, the Pistons get Iverson, and his up-temp scoring, in a contract year. Once Iverson’s $20 million contract comes off the books this summer, Pistons will be major players in the upcoming talent-rich free agent market.

The Pistons play the Charlotte Bobcats on Monday. While the Nuggets play the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday.
