A Brief History of Pool Jumps
27 Jul
Perhaps you’ve noticed the growing trend in athletic youtube showmanship: pool jumps. In case you haven’t noticed, here’s the rundown. About a year ago, Bears DE Jarron Gilbert was seen jumping out of a 3 ft swimming pool. No hands. He just jumped his 6′5″ 300 lbs. self out of the water; a feat that got him 1M+ viewers on youtube:
The viral success of the video started a trend. Ever since the Gilbert jump, athletes have been jumping out of pools (or other inspired jumps) just to show either 1) how great they are or 2) how lame Gilbert’s jump is.
The first major response came from a college prospect (now signed with the Redskins), Keith Eloi, jumping into a Ford F-150:
Some wrestler at Ohio State did a pool jump before Eloi, but it took 2 takes and wasn’t as big a hit:
MMA fighter BJ Penn has the most popular jump so far with 3M views:
Redskins Keith Eloi, not to be outdone, did the 3 ft pool backwards :
Delonte Stephens, a former swimmer who competed as high as Olympic trials, did a 3.5 ft jump just to show how easy Gilbert’s jump is:
This unnamed white guy jumped out of the pool and onto the bandwagon by doing it twice:
And finally, D1 football recruit Dakota Royer has outshined all the interwebz so far by jumping 4 ft:
