5 Must Watch Games This Weekend
5 Sep
Admit it – you may as well have just called in sick to work today because the upcoming weekend has tossed all your productivity out the window. You’re sitting at your desk, reading every fantasy football preview, reading every expert’s advice, listening to every podcast iTunes can spit out, and sizing up your roster until your eyes bleed. Need another football distraction? Great – here it is, the 5 must watch football games this weekend (but who am I kidding? You’ll be taking in at least a dozen).
Saturday
Miami at #5 Florida (5 p.m. PT, ESPN)
Florida “SHOULD” win this one easily. “Should” is a funny word though – just ask Clemson. And while you would think these two teams would make for a nice little in-state rivalry on a yearly basis, none of the players on the field have seen each other before. That’s because the last time they met was in the 2004 Peach Bowl, when the Hurricanes took a convincing 27-10 victory. Can Miami jump back on the road to college football prominence in Tim Tebow’s house?

Sorry, Timmy. Go polish your Heisman or something…
#8 West Virginia at East Carolina (1:30 p.m. PT, ESPN)
When Virginia Tech and West Virginia put East Carolina on their schedules, they were probably thinking one thing: cream puff. But today, VT is standing on the outside looking in at the national rankings, and West Virginia is scheduling a little more time in the film room. Can the Purple Pirates slow down Pat White (5 TD’s last week) enough to keep the magic going?
Sunday
Carolina Panthers at San Diego Chargers (1:15 p.m. PT FOX)
Which Phillip Rivers will we see this year? Is that knee ready to go? Is Tomlinson ready to shut up all the critics that dogged him for not playing in the AFC Championship? Will Antonio Gates be slowed by his toe injury? What on earth is going through Shawne Merriman’s head? As far as Carolina – keep an eye on potential rookie of the year running back Jonathan Stewart. Remember the last time a rookie of the year running back took the field against the San Diego D? If you don’t, check the record books.

Dallas Cowboys at Cleveland Browns (1:15 p.m. PT FOX)
Getchyo popcorn ready, because this one is sure to have some fireworks. Will Romo continue to tap into his inner Aikman? Is Derek Anderson going to show us 2007 was for real? Can Marion Barber handle the load and the spotlight in Dallas? Will Jamal Lewis keep chugging along? What antics will TO be up to? What effect will Donte Stallworth have on the Cleveland passing game? Will Brady Quinn’s better half be in attendance?

Sorry, Brady. Just be happy you’re not in South Bend anymore
Monday
Denver Broncos at Oakland Raiders (7:15 p.m. PT ESPN)
Yes, I know what you’re thinking – “the only reason I’m watching this game is because it’s on Monday Night Football, and there’s nothing else on TV.” But hear me out on why you should watch this game – the Denver Broncos have been stagnant for a few years now, so this year fans will need to see them take a step forward. They need to see Jay Cutler take over a game, and they need to see if Selvin Young is their running back so they can start snatching up jerseys. But of even more importance in this game are the performances of quarterback Jamarcus Russell and running back Darren McFadden. They’re young, but can they live up to the hype as soon as 2008? If they can, the Raiders may not be as good as the Chargers, but Oakland should do enough to make things interesting in the AFC West.
